How To Live Without Marriage In India

Indian parents are keener to get their children married than they are for them to graduate from IIT. As you reach your mid-20s, everyone around you develops a sudden preoccupation with watching you get married. Why? Why has marriage been portrayed as the ultimate life objective? Here, we explain why not wanting to get married is quite acceptable.

  • Many of us grow up believing everything we see in romantic movies or read in fairy tales and sexual books since the idea of marriage is deeply ingrained in our minds from an early age (due to our society). Whether we like to admit it or not, we have all secretly dreamed of a perfect love story that would come true, or we have waited (or still wait) for someone to "complete" us. Yet why? Is the existence of someone we haven't yet met what defines our lives? Let's put all those idealised ideas about marriage to the side and consider the reality of marriage.

  • Many of us believe that getting married is the end aim of life and that until we do so, we will not be genuinely happy. Others begin reminding us about "the proper moment" to get married while we are in our mid-20s. Our lives begin to revolve around the idea of finding a soul mate. But, no one ever mentions that marriage is merely a fact of life, much like schooling or a career. Your personal happiness is something you generate. Being married will only make your joyful life better.

  • Marriage can wait a while if you have other priorities in your life, and that's totally fine. Want to travel alone to Antarctica? Do it! Want to open a bakery of your own? Don't wait for approval from anyone. Want to move to a new place or change careers? What's holding you back, friend? If you want to live out your dreams and hold your partner's hand while doing everything, but you are delaying marriage to do so, you are doing it wrong, we assure you. Have your own life, whether you're married or not.

  • You are on the wrong track if you believe that being addressed as Mrs. XYZ will earn you respect from others, provide you with security, or give you a sense of identity. Marriage would undoubtedly give a new dimension to your life, but first you must learn to respect yourself, be able to manage your own finances, and ultimately be your own hero.

  • Don't let ideas like "one should get married in their mid-20s, have kids before they are 30, and your life is complete only after having kids" prevent you from living the life you want to live. To settle down with someone who is not the perfect person for you and make compromises for the rest of your life is one of the worst things you can do to yourself. Regardless of your age—25, 30, or 45—only get married if you are certain that the other person is worth spending the rest of your life with.

  • Everyone discusses getting married, but nobody discusses what comes after. Are you prepared to commit to this for your entire life? Have you considered what you want from this relationship and what you want from your partner? Only dive in once you are aware of the true motivation behind your choice to be married. There is no purpose in attempting to force events that should only take place at the appropriate moment.

  • The real accomplishment is maintaining a successful relationship for the rest of your life, not being married. Getting married is simple, but maintaining a happy marriage for the rest of your life is more challenging. It involves freely taking on all the obligations and sharing in both the happy and bad days.
